CBS's fall medical drama "Three Rivers" returned to town to film a new scene yesterday for its Oct. 4 premiere episode.
The show is set at fictional Three Rivers Regional Medical Center, which in the show's universe is situated on the North Shore roughly between Heinz Field and PNC Park.
Producers recruited members of the Pittsburgh Rugby Club to play in a scene with series star Alex O'Loughlin.
Mr. O'Loughlin's character, Dr. Andy Yablonski, runs down the field in a scene that ends with a resentful rugby player shoving Yablonski and declaring, "You may work across the river now, but I know where you came from. Remember that!"
The character Yablonski grew up in Mount Washington and works as a transplant surgeon at Three Rivers Regional Medical Center.
This trip marked the actor's second time in Pittsburgh after filming the original "Rivers" pilot here in the spring.
"I want to spend more time on the South Side and up here," Mr. O'Loughlin said. "I've had all the obvious stuff like Primanti Brothers and all that stuff, which is disgusting and fun but you never want to do it more than once. I love the surrounding areas of the city. It's a beautiful part of the world."

With some critics saying that Alex O’Loughlin’s Three Rivers will be a prime candidate for an early cancellation, it’s good to keep in mind that their opinion is based on the original pilot shot in Pittsburgh. That pilot will not be aired, although some scenes will be used in upcoming episodes. Another first episode is being worked on in the brand-new, hi-tech hospital set in Hollywood at Paramount Studios.
Rob Owen at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette gives his take on the recent poor reviews of the show in a TV Q&A that was posted today:
Q: I have been reading many, many poor review of CBS’s upcoming “Three Rivers.” Most of the comments I read predicted it to be the first cancelation of the new season. I was just wondering what you thought of it. It is a very depressing subject, that I do not see how a person can watch week after week.

Rob: Critics have not been kind to this Pittsburgh-set medical drama, as noted in our Aug. 5 story on the series. But having seen the three medical shows on the fall schedule — “Rivers,” NBC’s “Trauma” and “Mercy” — it’s certainly not the worst. That dubious distinction goes to “Mercy,” an awful show focused on nurses. And it should be noted that none of the medical shows ranks as fall’s best new series.
Let’s not forget, critics have only seen the initial “Rivers” pilot, which is no longer airing as the first episode, so there’s time for producers to create a better, new first episode. My take on that first “Three Rivers” pilot was that it was unremarkable. The supporting cast, by virtue of being largely newcomers, was intriguing. But there was some clunky-groaner dialogue with the mother of a heart donor wanting to listen to her dead daughter’s heart beat in the recipient’s chest.
As for the subject matter, executive producer Carol Barbee told me the show will also include living donor cases, so it won’t be necessary for someone to die every week. Also, that first pilot had little set in the hospital emergency room, but the set they’ve built in Hollywood has an extensive ER, an effort to expand medical stories somewhat beyond the transplant realm.
As for the potential for “Three Rivers” to be the first cancellation of the season, that’s certainly possible given the tough competition from ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” in the 9 p.m. Sunday time slot, but that show is aging. Granted, there were not enough rabid fans of “Rivers” star Alex O’Loughlin to keep “Moonlight” on the air, but CBS, by virtue of its position as the top-rated network, can afford to be somewhat patient. But that doesn’t mean they will be.

For Paley Fest: Fall TV Preview Parties, org is scheduling one day for each net and will offer screenings of rookie programs as well as panels to discuss the shows.
Fox will lead off with "Glee," "The Cleveland Show" and "Brothers" on Sept. 9; CCH Pounder and Michael Strahan will participate in the "Brothers" panel.
The cast of "Community" will take part in NBC's night (Sept. 10), which will also include screenings of "Trauma" and "Mercy."
CBS takes the Sept. 11 slot with "Accidentally on Purpose," "The Good Wife," "NCIS: Los Angeles" and "The Three Rivers."
The CW will present "Melrose Place," "The Vampire Diaries" and "The Beautiful Life" on Sept. 14.
"FlashForward" exec producer David Goyer, as well as co-star Sonya Walger, will field questions on Sept. 15, when the Alphabet presents its new skeins. Also unspooling that night will be "Hank," "The Middle," "Modern Family" and "Cougar Town."

Ein kleiner Artikel über Back up Plan und Three Rivers!
Oh, wie ich Alex O'Loughlin vermisst habe. Ich kann es kaum erwarten, Ihnen zu erzählen, mit wie vielen Schmähworten ich mich während seiner Tage in "Moonlight", befassen musste, weil ich der Meinung war, dass der Pilot für diese Serie gerade o.k. war. Ich hatte eine andere Meinung als einige Leser meines Artikels "B.S.," und war genötigt, eine ganze Menge von Kommentaren darüber auszuhalten, wie toll O'Loughlin war, und das obwohl ich versicherte, dass ich mich mehr für die Serie und deren Aspekte an sich interessieren wurde, und nicht für seinen "Hotness Quotienten" Alex. Die Ironie …? Als ich meldete, dass die Show annulliert wurde, gab CBS Unterhaltungspräsidentin Nina Tassler zu, dass "die Reaktion auf 'Moonlight' wirklich mehr Schauspieler-zenitriert war," Ich wurde mit Antworten von Lesern bombardiert, die erschüttert und verletzt waren und die meinten sie würde etwas total lächerliches sagen.
Also, am Ende wollte Tassler O'Loughlin wirklich innerhalb der CBS Familie behalten. Und sie hat ihren Wunsch bekommen, denn sie hat ihm eine Rolle im neuen CBS-Drama , "Three Rivers" angeboten(Ja, es spielt in Pittsburgh ), wo er mit Katherine Moennig ("L-Word"), Daniel Henney ("X-Men-Origins: Volverine"), Justina Machado ("Six Feet Under"), Christopher J. Hanke, and…Alfre Woodard? arbeiten wird.
Ja: Frau Woodard kam erst kürzlich an Bord der Serie, deswegen antwortete O'Loughlin auf seine erste Frage auf der On-Set-Pressekonferenz für die TCA Mitglieder, sie sei ein SpätzünderŽ scratch .

O'Loughlin sagt, dass er kaum Probleme mit dem In-einem-amerikanischen-Akzent-spielen hatte, aber das medizinische Material verlangt viel Studieren, das Lesen, und Praktizieren…was er schnell demonstriert, indem er den Ausdruck "hypotropic myopathy" immer wieder rezitiert.
"Als ich den Piloten das erste Mal las, aß ich mit Lina zu Mittag, und ich traf mich mit Carol Barabee ein paar Mal, und …" Er sah zu Carol. "…du hattest mich darin! Ich war so nervös, als ich Sie traf, weil es eine große Sache ist, diese Reise zu unternehmen , wenn Sie es ernst nehmen, ist es enorm. Sie wissen, dass ich keine medizinische Ausbildung habe,aber es gibt so viel zu erfahren, bei null anzufangen und trotzdem überzeugend zu sein, wenn Sie diese medizinischen Ausdrücke verwenden. Und wir waren die ganze Zeit in Pittsburgh, und davor habe ich medizinische Zeitschriften studiert, und telefonierte und ich forschte die ganze Nacht.
"Ich schlief in Pittsburgh nicht sehr viel und ich pendelte mehrmals von Pittsburgh nach Cleveland. Ich verbrachte viel Zeit fliegend und viel Zeit im OR mit Gonzales, der Chirurg, auf dem mein Charakter beruht, der mit mir studierte.Und jetzt bin ich besessen davon
Ich habe den falschen Beruf gewählt. Ich bin so langweilig. Ich hätte Arzt werden sollen.Mein Vater wollte Herz-Chirurg werden. Das war einmal sein Traum; es war etwas, wovon er ebenso bessessen war."
So, was denkt er jetzt?
"Wir weinen zusammen darüber," sagte er ernst.
Und dann lachte er dankbar.
Sogar mit dem ganzen offensichtlichen medizinischen Drama, das es in "Three Rivers geben wird, versichert Barabee uns, dass es viel Charakter-Kram geben wird, dass mit Verfahrenselementen gemischt wird.
Irgendwelche romantischen Verwicklungen für den Charakter von Herrn O'Loughlin?
"Oh, es wird viele romantische Verwicklungen geben," antwortete Barbee mit einem Grinsen.
Mit anderen Serien-Kollegen?
"Mit allen," versicherte uns OŽLoughlin
"Verwicklungen ist das richtige Wort," mischte sich Moenning ein.
"Sie auch, Alfre," blinzelte O'Loughlin.

Sagen Sie was?
"'St. Elsewhere.' Vor 50.000 Jahren. Ich erinnere mich noch daran. Ich kämpfte mit Denzel eines Nachts darüber. Wir beide dachten, dass es unser Text war. Ich, sagte 'Oh, nein. Es ist meins.' Er sagte, 'Es ist meins.' Ich sagte, " Ich muss dieses Wort sagen. '"
"Was ist das?" fragte O'Loughlin. "Was bedeutet es?"
"Ich war ein OBGYN," antwortete Woodard, "es hat etwas mit dem wunderbaren weiblichen Körper zu tun."
"Stimmt eine wunderbare Sache, das ist er ," antwortete O'Loughlin.

It’s been two years since CBS pulled the plug on his short-lived cult hit Moonlight, but former vampire detective Alex O’Loughlin will get hearts racing again on the network’s new medical drama, Three Rivers, this fall. TVGuideMagazine.com caught up with the Aussie actor on the set of Three Rivers in Los Angeles where he spilled secrets about how he spent his summer, his hidden talents and his new show, which premieres October 4.
Will Three Rivers be a hit with Moonlight fans?
Yeah, I hope so. This one is a very important show. I really hope that my fans come with me on this because Andy means as much to me as Mick St. John does. And if everybody comes with me and has a look and gives this a chance, they’ll see why.
What will appeal to them about this show?
Vampires are sexy. From my earliest memory of vampires, they’re sexy, seductive, sensual creatures. We don’t really have that in this show but we have a lot of blood!
And you wear tight scrubs too.
[Laughs] We have tight scrubs. We have wet skin when we scrub in. We make eyes at each other over the operation table. There’s going to be lots of love affairs and stuff like that would happen in a real hospital. It’s going to be really exciting.
You’ve said that you’re a big fan of the vampire genre. Have you been following Twilight and True Blood?
I haven’t been following Twilight. I watch True Blood when I can, but I’ve been very busy. So I’d like to get a box set and watch it that way. I actually went to network for that show.
You did? For what part?
Yeah, at the same time I got Moonlight. I tried out to play Bill, the main vampire, and also Sam the dog.
Do you think things would have gone differently for Moonlight if the show had aired now?
Maybe. But maybe it wouldn’t have got picked up at all because there’s too much vampires. What can you do? Moonlight will always be the best.
Think you’ll ever do a reunion movie?
People have talked about that. I don’t know how realistic it is though. It would take a lot to pull that off, to get everyone back together but it would be cool. My concern would be that we did it justice, because that would then be the last memory of Mick St. John. Even though it’s very, very sad where we left it, we still loved the show and I would hate to think that movie in its finality would kind of taint that image because those characters mean so much.

So are your parents excited that their son is a doctor now?
[Laughs]. A faux doctor! My parents have always been very proud of me. They’ve supported me the whole time. My parents are awesome.
What kind of prep work did you do before you came to set?
Triple bypasses. [Laughs] No. I started with what I had in the script. I started researching all of these diseases of the heart and conditions of the heart and operations that needed to take place and branched off from there. The world of medicine is immense, but also the doctor-patient relationship was very important to me. I worked with a surgeon, and he’s a pure, benevolent person. So that sort of study, the study of him, was as interesting as the study of medicine.
Did you watch any real surgeries?
Yes. I saw a bunch of surgeries.
Be honest, did you ever get queasy?
No. I loved it. The only time I’d get a little queasy is when I smelled the burning flesh. That was like, “Oh, that’s nasty!” But I couldn’t take my eyes off it. I had blood spurting up at me and everything.
On a lighter note, what was it like making the movie The Back-Up Plan with Jennifer Lopez this summer?
Jennifer is the consummate professional and always prepared. She brings a great light and joyous energy to set. She’s never late. All the bull you hear…She was just a pro and rad to work with. She’s funny and we became pals, you know? It was super.
Did you ever have a moment where you thought, “Wow, I’m actually getting paid to make out with J. Lo?”
Yeah. It was more like I was thinking, “Oh my god, I’m kissing Jennifer Lopez!”
Was she a good kisser?
Yeah. [Laughs] No comment.
You don’t want Marc Anthony knocking on your door?
No comment! But it was terrific and I think the film is going to be good. We’ll see. I hope I’m okay in it, but I had a great time.
What else did you do this summer?
I worked. I so need a vacation right now. I’ve been working and working out and trying to stay healthy and cooking my own food. I actually just started this thing with this company that delivers healthy food because I don’t have time to cook anymore.
Are you a good cook?
I’m okay. I barbeque. I grill chicken and fish, and I can make good salads and veggies and make some nice dressings.
So you cook for women you date?
Yeah, for sure! I don’t always cook because I’m busy but I’ve worked in a lot of restaurants and a lot of kitchens so I can conjure stuff up pretty well. I’ve been a waiter. I’ve been a barman. I’ve been a kitchen man. I’ve worked on construction sites. I’ve flipped burgers. I’ve fried chicken.
Did you just say you fried chicken?
I worked at KFC when I was 13 or something. I’ve done some pretty crazy jobs like landscaping, which I really enjoyed. I helped a guy build a house. That was cool.
So you’ve got some mad skills.
Not really. I’m more like one of those jack-of-all-trades, master of nothing. But I’ve always been an inquiring mind. It used to get me in trouble. I’d be like, “Let’s get this power saw and ride the skateboard at the same time and plug it in with a very long extension cord then I’ll wear a helmet and go over that jump.” You get the picture.
Have you given up skateboarding?
Yeah. I’m crazy for motorcycles. I just finished building my first Harley. My last four bikes have been Ducatis and I’ve got a Triumph now.
Any other vices?
That’s my most dangerous vice. I really enjoy the finer things in life. So the idea of a great holiday for me is to go to Europe, go to Paris, eat some great cheese, smoke some great cigars, go to the theater then go on a yacht and sail somewhere else. That’s just heaven for me. In 2016, I think I’ll be able to do that. You don’t get to go away while you’re working. It’s great to be working, but that’s what I’d do. I’d go away, get a bit of sun, sleep.
